21 Things -- homework

About two years ago I started my blog "Library Antics", but it really never left the hanger. Now with the ALSC's 21 Things program, the first assignment was -- Create a Blog. :D so that was the easy part, now I just have to find time to do my homework.

Mashable on Social Media

Discovered it on my first visit to Delicious, it seem like a good omen since our 21 Things program is exploring this very question.

Thing 5 -- Delicious

I have to admit that when I saw the "Delicious" name, the first thing that pop up in my mind was cupcakes.

OK, back to work...
1. Sign up for Delicious.
2. Added my first two bookmarks. (I hope!)
3. Homework.
from Thing 5 section
Some questions to ponder:

* How might you use Delicious in your daily work activities?
I can see this working really well at work because I'm usually going back and forth between my laptop and the reference computers, and I find myself recreating my bookmark folder and not remember which computer I had save what bookmarks.

* How can you use Delicious to collaborate with colleagues?
* How could Delicious help students who use your library?

I can see us using it to create list for student assignments--especially those obscure assignment--books by an African American author about an African American topic. Why would a teacher do this to a students still boggles the mind, but as a librarian we can only shake our heads and help our kids the best way we can. OK the head shaking might be internal, but still.

I can see so much potential, cannot wait to share it with my fellow librarians.

These I will save for a later time, I need to think more of them.
* How can they use it for homework?
* What about parents and teachers?
* What about for recreational purposes?
* How can students use Delicious for group projects or social networking?

Thing 4 -- Google Reader

So many sites!

Now I just need to go add more blogs to my google reader.

questions from Thing 4--
* Did you run into any speed bumps setting up your account?
* How do you feel about this new approach to customizing your news and information?
* It's easy to feel overwhelmed, how do you handle info-overload when you're feeling bogged down?
* Do you think RSS may help with that feeling?

First comment:

Is hard not to feel like a kid in a candy shop. I think I'm finding it hard to focus because at every turn something looks good and I want it. Thanks Kelley for reaffirming that "letting-go" is ok and I like the advice of being "attuned to what I'm using it" approach, I think that might be best way to tackle the information overload.

a little more...

No major speed bumps setting up the Google Reader, I guess it helps to have a gmail account. I think my learning curve hit a small speed bump because the home page to Google Reader was not very clear or easy to figure out. I guess I was expecting more of Google's simplicity on the page and it did not have that--at least for me.

I do like the idea of having one place to turn to for the latest news, but as I commented above, I'm having a hard time trying to focus. My usual response to feeling bogged down with information is to tune it out, go find one of my favorite books and escape. Here's to Google Reader making me a better student!

Thing 3 -- something technology related

Assignment: Blog post about something technology related

In trying to find out what Shakespearean plays I had seen and how many of those are tragedies, I discovered OpenSource Shakespeare(http://www.opensourceshakespeare.org/views/plays/plays.php). I usually think of the plays in two categories, comedies and tragedies, but the site has them into three genres: comedies, tragedies and histories.

Now I know that I have seen 6 of the comedies, 5 of the tragedies and none of the histories. I tell you, discoveries like these is why I love the internet!

Thing 2 -- Library 2.0

The more I read about Library 2.0, the more I realized that I need a clone of myself to keep up with all of it. I like the definition from the wiki of what Library 2.0--"dynamic idea that will give you the ability to meet evolving needs and new knowledge formats." The librarian in me is screaming that "yes, we need all of resources to provide everything to our patrons." The practical side of me realizes that you cannot give everything to everyone, but we can try.

The week before the start of 21 Things, my branch manager had a discussion about the new online social networking guidelines the branches finally obtain. So as dutiful civil servants we started working on our Facebook page for the Branch. All I can say is that all those of you who have your own pages, blogs, etc, have my utmost respect!

Week 1

I'm late with my homework, although someone else used the excuse of having to run the summer reading club, but I'm also in LA and we have a bit of a heatwave going by. No AC in the apartment means that I get home and just turn into a puddle in front of the fan. I think I had a dream that the cat and I were sitting in front of the AC unit.

As I stated somewhere, 21 things is a good excuse to use my blog, cannot promise I will keep it up after the program ends, but one never knows where the new addiction will come from.

Looking forward to the next few weeks.
